The Black Lives Matter movement has been immensely powerful, and I am in awe of the incredible members of the black community around the world who have been speaking out against the injustices that occur every day.
There is so much that we can all do to influence positive change and be good allies – educating ourselves, donating, speaking up, have conversations with our friends and family, and so much more. Taking some sort of action, every single day, is vital.
As I have researched and reflected the past month, I came across so many businesses owned by women of color that truly resonated with me.
Below, I have listed nine businesses, all owned by women who work hard each day to carry out their personal missions that benefit others. I am deeply inspired by each and every one of these powerful women, and can’t wait to share them with you too.
Ronni Nicole Robinson works with her husband, David Robinson, to produce handmade pieces that inspire purpose and presence. Ronni, the artist, creates elegant pieces of art which she calls “Floral Inspired Fossils”, which she believes are placed in your home to serve as a space of self-awareness and a reminder to slow down.
As someone who finds great joy in art and general home decor, I am inspired by Candice Luter’s creations. Now the founder and lead designer of her own company, Candice started her journey putting together one-of-a-kind designs using scraps and fabrics from around her studio. Now, she has made a name for herself and has her pieces showcased in many stores – including my all-time favorite, West Elm.
This amazing company focuses on “bringing good vibes to the wellness industry” through superfood-boosted health and beauty essentials. Co-founders Trinity Mouzon Wofford and Issey Kobori lead this company and devote their energy to empowering the health of others. I personally have heard great things about their Pure Matcha!
I have been following and learning from Danielle Coke for a little while, and she is just the sweetest soul; not to mention, she’s very talented. Her prints, focused on faith, justice and optimism, continue to inspire so many men and women around the world. She is truly using her platform to help others and spread joy.
Ladies, this is the brand we have been waiting for. A 100% natural, biodegradable, cruelty-free, clinically tested and gynecologist-approved feminine and menstrual care brand that is powered by women. Bea Dixon took it upon herself to create a line of female hygiene products made from ingredients that honestly promote our bodily health.
“Bring good vibes home” – doesn’t that sound great? Justina Blakeney started out with a simple design blog, and from it has built a company that markets colorful and modern creations locally designed and from around the world. Jungalow is sustainable wherever possible, generously donates to nonprofits, and plants at least two trees with every single order placed.
KJ Miller and Amanda E. Johnson believe that every woman should be able to find herself through beauty, no matter the shade of her skin. So, these two ladies took it upon themselves to create a brand to carry out this mission. Mented welcomes all skin tones, with a line of vegan, paraben-free, non-toxic, cruelty-free lipsticks, and several other beautiful products.
Founder Hana Getachew, born in Ethiopia, uses her experience in interior design to create beautiful handwoven fabrics inspired by her upbringing, from which she was surrounded by traditional Ethopian textiles. Her creations reflect personal, global and modern aesthetics that are sure to be staples in your home.
Erin James worked as a beauty artist for 18 years, and it opened her eyes to how art can change a person’s life for the better. So, with that knowledge, she founded Frolic + Sage, a candle company that “evokes a sense of luxury and love with a heaping sense of laughter”. Each scent has a different fun phrase that will bring positivity into your space.
